Ngorongoro Crater

Often referred to as the “Eighth Wonder of the World,” the Ngorongoro Crater is one of Africa’s most iconic natural landmarks. Formed around two million years ago by a massive volcanic eruption, it is the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera, stretching 20 kilometers across and 600 meters deep. Within this enclosed ecosystem lies an astonishing concentration of wildlife—over 25,000 large animals, including elephants, zebras, wildebeest, and an unusually dense population of lions. The crater is also one of the best places in Tanzania to spot the endangered black rhino. Its landscapes range from grassy plains and acacia forests to soda lakes teeming with flamingos and hippos. With its combination of dramatic scenery and unparalleled wildlife density, Ngorongoro offers one of the most rewarding safari experiences in Africa.
